K&N Backed RoadRace Factory & Jake Gagne Win Double at Wisconsin’s Road America
- Jun 8, 2015
The RoadRace Factory team concept was developed with the intent of providing a "next step" program to support top young guns coming up through the ranks. First started in 2011 the RoadRace Factory Redbull AMA Pro Road Racing team entered the inaugural MotoAmerica Road Racing 2015 season ready to do battle. The K&N equipped RoadRace Factory Redbull Team rider Jake Gagne made the step up to the larger displacement Yamaha R1 for the new 1000cc Superstock Class with hopes of becoming the first 1000cc Superstock Champion. 2014 Sportbike Rookie of the Year, Tomas Puerta returned to the K&N equipped RoadRace Factory Redbull team as the lead SuperSport rider. Last year at Road America Jake Gagne pulled off a double victory in the 600 class and completely dominated from start to finish. As it turns out, 2015 would be no different for Jake Gagne at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The first two Superstock practice sessions were held on Friday this year for Road America, with the first session held under beautiful conditions while the afternoon session became less than ideal. In the afternoon wet weather rolled in and the track became soaked with rain. Once again on Saturday morning the practice and Superpole sessions were held in wet conditions. Temperatures plummeted 40 degrees from Friday and the winds became a factor on the long exposed sections of track. However, Jake's time in the previous three sessions meant he would be in the fast group competing for Pole Position. In the 15 minutes Jake was given to grab the best possible starting position he and his crew scored a P1 in his class and a P4 overall. Jake would start both races at Road America in the middle of the second row on Sunday.
On Sunday morning, the K&N equipped RoadRace Factory Redbull Team arrived at the track to find blue skies and sunshine. The temperature remained low, not expected to get over 50 degrees, but at least the rain had passed. Jake and the team switched back to their dry track setup and utilized all the available track time during their 20 minute morning warm-up to dial in the K&N equipped Yamaha R1. Whatever the team did worked as Jake went out and set a pace almost two seconds faster than his nearest rival. In the first of two races on Sunday Jake Gagne got a phenomenal start. Initially Gagne kept pace with the factory superbikes, but by the 1/3 race point he was losing sight of the lead group. Jake would continue to ride lap after lap as if he was being chased by hungry wolves. However, the faster factory supported Superbikes kept pulling away and eventually developed a major gap over Jake Gagne. At the checkers Jake crossed the line in first place for the Superstock class and in fourth overall. Danny Walker, RoadRace Factory Redbull Team Manager, said of Gagne’s results “He pulled off the double here and it was awesome to see him on the podium with his dad. We still have room to grow with this program and I truly believe we haven't seen the full potential of this combination of Jake and the R1. Road America is so fast that we knew we'd be down on speed versus the bigger bikes, but Barber is a great place where speed advantages are minimized and I expect that we'll see a Superstock in the top three overall." Jake and the K&N supported RoadRace Factory Redbull Team are now focusing on the next round of MotoAmerica Road Racing at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds, Alabama in a few weeks. |
