Dirt builds up on the outside and blocks openings causing higher vacuum pressure that distorts the cells and causes contaminants to be drawn deeper into the filter and potentially into the engine. Unlike conventional paper and foam filters, the contaminants captured by the K&N filter become part of the filter medium because they are suspended in the cotton strands. So there is less of an effect on airflow. The air continues to pass through the cotton strands and is not affected by the captured contaminants.
