The Mini has a long and influential production history dating back to 1959. John Cooper, owner of the Cooper Car Company and builder of race cars, saw the potential to create a performance car out of the Mini and after appealing to British Motor Corporation (BMC) management the Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S were born in 1961. As part of a global movement to reduce environmental impact the third generation F56 Mini Cooper, Mini Cooper S, and the BMW Active Tourer series have adopted twin scroll turbocharged, direct injection engines for a combination of power and fuel efficiency. The standard engine for the Mini Cooper Hardtop is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder TwinPower engine which makes considerably more horsepower and torque than the outgoing second generation 2013 R56 Mini Cooper Hardtop. The 2014 Mini Cooper Hardtop, equipped with a smaller engine, is said to accelerate from 0-60 mph 2.3 seconds faster than the 2013 model. It goes without saying that the 2.0-liter TwinPower turbo engine used in the Mini Cooper S makes more power, and accelerates even quicker than the base model.
